Tap a picture to see it full screen
Every picture in Sketchbook now opens full screen when you tap or click it, on a black background, with zoom, the next and previous picture, and Download or Share. On the web, the tablet and the phone.
The request, just after one in the morning on 18 October: “when i click on one of these pics then i want to view it full screen”. Until now a picture on a page opened in a new browser tab at its full size, and in the phone and tablet app it did nothing at all.
Where it works
- Pages: pictures in the text, pictures attached to a page, and sections such as a build page’s Renders. Tapping one opens it with every other picture on the same page, in reading order, so you can go through them all without going back to the page.
- Social: a draft’s photos open as they will be posted, with the crop and size for that platform.
- Files: the preview of a picture file opens full screen. On the phone and tablet, opened from its folder, the other pictures in that folder come with it.
- Photos: already had a viewer. It now uses the same one, so it gains zoom as well.
The Claude chat does not show pictures at the moment, only a note that a picture was there, so there is nothing to open there yet.
The viewer
- Black, whatever the theme, with the picture fitted to the screen.
- The name of the picture and where it is in the set, for example “2 of 43”.
- Next and previous with a swipe, the arrow keys, or the arrow buttons on the web.
- Zoom with a pinch or a double tap on a touch screen, and with the mouse wheel or a double click on a computer. Drag to look around a zoomed picture. While it is zoomed, a swipe moves the picture instead of going to the next one.
- Close with the cross, the Back button or Escape. Back closes the picture, not the page underneath it.
- Download on the web (Share as well, on phones whose browser can share files). Save to Downloads and Share in the app.
- On the web it asks the browser for full screen. In the app the status and navigation bars are hidden while a picture is open and come back when it closes.
Private pictures stay private
Pictures from the private journal, or from folders that need the PIN, only open while they are unlocked. When the lock closes, an open picture closes with it. A journal picture is never offered to Share, and in the app it has no Save or Share at all, because journal content is never written to the device’s storage.
Not yet
The viewer was checked in a web browser against the live notebook, on a phone-sized and a desktop-sized screen, and on a phone emulator with example pictures. It has not been tried on a real phone or tablet yet. In the app, the Social and Files viewers are covered by automated tests but were not opened on the emulator.
