Many photos and files at once

· Sketchbook changelog

A camera that stays open, batches of photos and files in one go, and an upload queue that shows progress, retries and survives going offline.

The ask was short: “I should also be able to take multiple photos, and upload multiple files”. As always, it had to work the same on the web, the tablet and the phone.

A camera that stays open

The system camera on Android hands back one photo and closes. So Sketchbook now has its own camera screen: shutter, flash, front and back camera, a strip of thumbnails you can tap to see large or delete, a running count, and a Done button that says what it is about to do (“Save 6 photos”). Cancel asks before throwing anything away. On the web the same camera works in any browser that offers one.

If you refuse the camera permission, the app tells you where to allow it, or offers to choose photos instead.

Where a batch lands

Housekeeping treats a batch as one capture, not ten pages. File names that mean something, such as an invoice number or a part name, count as text when Claude decides how to title and file the page. Names a camera generates do not.

An upload queue you can see

Uploads go one after another per page, with a progress bar for each file, and a sheet that lists everything waiting, uploading, waiting for a connection, or failed. A failed upload is kept with Retry and Remove instead of quietly disappearing. On the phone and tablet the queue survives going offline and restarting the app; large files are streamed rather than read into memory. On the web the queue retries by itself when the connection comes back, and warns you before you leave a page with uploads still waiting. If a retry follows a lost reply, the file still lands only once.

On the web you can also drag files straight onto a page, or attach them from the read view.

The journal stays private

All of this works in the journal too, but only while it is unlocked. Journal photos and files are kept in memory only, never written to the device’s storage, and the queue is emptied the moment the journal locks.

Photos also show the right way up now, wherever they were taken.
